Putting glass in a skip

Short answer: yes, no special rules

Glass — window panes, bottles, jars, mirrors — is listed as standard acceptable waste by most UK skip hire suppliers and several council-run skip services. Unlike plasterboard or upholstered furniture, there's no specific landfill regulation singling glass out.

The real reason to be careful: safety, not rules

Broken glass is a genuine injury risk during loading and when the skip is eventually emptied. Wrap large panes or sharp pieces, and avoid just tipping loose broken glass in on top of other waste where it can't be seen.

Large volumes of glass

If you're clearing a large amount of glass specifically — a shopfront or greenhouse replacement, for example — ask your supplier whether it's better handled as its own load, since clean glass is genuinely recyclable and mixing it into general waste reduces how much can actually be recovered.

Window units

Whether a supplier accepts whole glazed window frames, or wants the glass removed first, varies by supplier — ask before loading several at once.
