Can you put a sofa in a skip?

It's genuinely changed since 2023 — a real landfill ban, not just a guideline.

Putting a sofa or upholstered furniture in a skip

Short answer: it's genuinely more restricted since 2023

Since 1 January 2023, sofas, armchairs, dining and office chairs, footstools, futons and bean bags are legally banned from UK landfill and must be incinerated instead, following an Environment Agency finding of high levels of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) — toxic flame-retardant chemicals — in the foam and fabric.

Why this actually changed things

Before 2023, this kind of furniture typically went to general landfill in a mixed skip like anything else. Now it legally has to be handled and incinerated separately, which is a real operational change for skip suppliers, not just a guideline.

What this means for booking a skip

Many suppliers now ask you to declare upholstered seating separately when booking, or may charge an additional fee to cover the different disposal route. Some may ask for it to be collected separately rather than placed in a general skip at all — check with your specific supplier.

This does not cover mattresses

This is a specific, separate rule from the general mattress surcharge covered in our mattress disposal guide — mattresses are explicitly excluded from this legislation, which applies only to upholstered domestic seating.
